One of the earliest off-reservation boarding schools for Native American children in the U.S. was located here in Forest Grove. The Forest Grove Indian School, which was just a few blocks from our downtown, took children from tribes across the Pacific Northwest and tried to assimilate them: forcing them to give up their home languages, cultures and beliefs.
Recently, OPB worked with members of the Klamath Tribes to trace how this school and others like it affected generations of Native children. Filmed partly in Forest Grove, the film includes footage of our town and of members of Pacific's Indigenous Student Alliance, as well as interviews with FHFG's board member and Pacific University archivist Eva Guggemos. The film is not only about the pain that Native children endured in these schools: it is also about resilience and recovery, showing how tribes of today are healing and growing.
The event will begin with a reception held in Pacific's Berglund Hall, followed by a screening of the film and a moderated panel discussion with the producer.
